Tom Mariana, Sr.
Inducted - 1989
The Ravenna City School District
A 1930 graduate of Ravenna High School, Tom Mariana has been a major figure in Portage County athletics for many years. His love of sports began as a child and developed to a point of excellence in high school. Tom was an outstanding athlete in all sports, especially football.
As a young man, in 1937, he became Director of Recreation for Ravenna and developed the Summer Playground Program. Tom founded the Portage County Hot Stove League and served as President for twenty years. Tom was recognized as being one of the best officials in the State of Ohio in football, basketball and baseball. The Portage County Umpire's Association and the Portage County Sports Hall of Fame were but two more organizations he helped to establish. In addition to serving as the second President of that Hall of Fame, his reputation as an athlete, official and sportsman led to his induction into the Portage County Sports Hall of Fame. It is no less proper than for Tom Mariana's achievements in athletics and major contributions to the children of Ravenna, to our school district and to the community, that he be recognized by the Ravenna Ravens' Hall of Fame Committee for induction into this Hall of Fame, and thus it is so!
